My opinion about ( I Love NY more than ever )

In this article the author Steven Heller interviews Milton Glasser about I love NY logo. When Glasser at first did this logo it was for marketing campaign for New York city. Glasser expected that his design will last only for few months then it will die, but the unexpectedly, the logo become a successful icon and continued to be sold until nowadays.

Glasser modified his logo After 9/11 attacks, he added I Love NY more than ever with a little black spot on the red heart to symbolize the effect of that attack on people’s hearts. Many visitors to the city bought the I love NY T-shirts to show their support, unity to the people of this city. This logo has become apart of American Pop culture.

Changing a logo according to the events is a way to express emotions toward that event. We see a lot of logos changes according to events. For examples: google, and the latest events in the middle east when they changed icons in their flags. And what happened in the last two years in Jeddah floods, people changed the logo of the secretariat of Jeddah city logo to betrayal Jeddah. Or the logo of Jeddah Gheer to Jeddah Gheerget, which means Jeddah is drawn. A simple logo has an impact in expressing our feelings towards an issue and this simple logo sometimes can tells a lot than words.

My opinion about ( Beautility Good Design Has Utility )

In this presentation, the girls were introducing the meaning behind the word “ beautility “. From what I understood from the presentation that beautility is compensation between two words, beauty and useful. In short it means that any thing in the word that is beautiful side and on the same time its useful and functional. I think that every thing that god created it is beautiful and useful. For example, flowers are the most beautiful creature in the world and its useful to make perfumes. On the other hand, bee is an ugly insect but very useful because it makes honey for us.

In contrast, I liked the part that they talked about the ugly and useful objects. Like for example how designers here improve the meaning of beauty to more practical and useful things that we use to have but they are not practical. For instance, apple laptop bags were beautiful but not practical because it is big and harm the back. Now, the designer created new bags that is more beautiful and very useful that u can hold it easily anywhere you go and it has different colors and shapes.

my opinion about ( A Life of Luxury)

While we were presenting our topic about “ luxury “, I was thinking about what is the thing that makes me feel luxury. Luxury is a very complicated word that cannot have only one meaning. It has different meaning according to the person and what he feels to make him/her feel luxurious. In my opinion, luxury is any thing around us weather its moral or sensory that can make the person feel comfortable and pleasure him/her senses.

To every human being the word “ luxury” usually means something unique, expensive and over whelming to the extent that you could walk around without giving care about anyone or anything in sight.

For example, international medical center (IMC) consider most luxurious hospital in Jeddah. I feel comfortable and save when I interned there. The weather and the services their makes me feel as if I am in a 5 stars hotel. Also the way the servicers and nurses dealing with people is really great and make me say it is a luxury hospital that I can not find like this dealing in any other hospital.

my opinion about ( Brand Name Dropper)

my opinion about ( Think Globally, Upload Locally )

(Think globally, Upload Locally) the title its self is interesting and attractive. The internet is easily accessible by everyone around the world, and for that it has positive and negative impacts. Some negative impacts about the web is that anyone could upload anything, and that always raises the question of how reliable is the source of information, other negative aspect is that websites took the place of books, nowadays teenagers prefer to use the internet rather than read a book. Using the internet properly is very hard, because it is filled with negative rumors, hocks, and political jocks that could make huge misunderstandings even between countries. moreover, its not just for The internet but also in Design. whenever a designer works on something he should consider the Glob outside while thinking and designing, no one knows where can his designs reach. on the other hand, sometimes Designs or artwork cannot be viewed or shown outside a specific country or city because no one would understand it or get it, like the examples they had in the presentation about the UAE Blocked pages in the internet, that character is totally for Emarits people.
here in KSA saudi designers try their best to come up with local designs that matches the culture and only works here not anywhere else, all of that because they want to Strengthens the traditions throughout the Design.

my opinion about ( The weaving of design and community )

the presentation talks about designing for community and for the public needs. this topic is internationally needed.nowadays, many advertisements and designs are trying to make their ways to consumers more thoroughly. Consumers have become more concerned about important issues in this world that are selfless! This kind of thinking is promoted more throughout movies, or maybe the tons of depressing news we hear everyday or by any other means.
here in Jeddah the community service in general is required from all ages, in schools colleges and companies. so designers are more required to design for community and for what the public needs. one of the questions in the end of the presentation made me stop and think a lot , (do you think Saudi Designer would work for free, for his community? , why ? )
for me as a Saudi designer i would do it 100% but of course beside my regular job, i won't leave my job because of course i need to earn money , in the same time ill manage my time to do some community service in Design wise.

my opinion about ( Reality )

knowing exactly the culture and tradition of the country helps a lot in designing and branding. the more the designer search and dig deep, the more smart and impressive ideas he gets. in the presentation they covered this topic form a good perspective , showing examples here in KSA that really shows what they are talking about and also showing international examples. the CEO was a good example to show and explain , they have this motto " the brand is the thing" and this is what the presentation is all about.
